March 11 and 12, 2006 Our little mini-adventure from San Diego to the Anza Borrego Desert, in southern California. We had record-breaking snowfall (for one day) in the mountains east of San Diego. We encountered long lines of traffic as people were stopped before the grade to Julian, and then the road down into the desert was closed and we had to take an alternative route.

We set up camp in the rain, retiring early to the coziness of the tent. Then we awoke to a splendid, very cold, dry morning, and the magnificent sight of snow-covered mountains all around us - my first time seeing that here! On the route home on Sunday, cars were pulled off the side of the road everywhere, with kids and adults alike, playing in the snow, throwing snowballs, and making snowmen. What an incredible treat!
